Pentax K10D vs Nikon D300 vs Nikon D90: High ISO Image Noise Performance – Jeff Kott:

I have a Pentax K10D and six limited lenses. I also have a D300 and recently bought a D90 to get similar image quality as the D300 in a more compact package.

I find in going back and forth between the K10D and the D300/D90, that I really appreciate the extra DR and lower noise of the Nikons especially at ISO 640 and 800 which I use a lot.

I make a lot of 16″x 24″ prints and find that I can shoot with impunity at ISO 640 or 800 with the Nikons and get acceptable images with a little bit of noise reduction at ISO 1600.

When I print large with the K10D, I need to use noise reduction software even at ISO 400.

    Nikon D5000 vs Nikon D60 vs Nikon D90: Paul Christensen’s Opinion – Quite a lengthy write-up there.

Having shot extensively with the D60 myself, owned and sold the D90, and now proud owner of the D5000, I can confirm that the image quality on the D5000 is at the same level with the D90, and both cameras have better image quality in terms of dynamic range, tonality and low high-ISO image noise than the D60.

Nikon D90 vs Sony A330: Grip – Ionian related his experience at Adorama:

… So the guy holding the D90 says, “Yeah, I’ve been carrying this but I’m not happy at all” and he reaches into his knapsack and pulls out some P&S. So the other guy says to the guy with the P&S holding the D90 – “You want to feel a real disaster? Check out the Sony!” and the guy holding the D90 puts it down and picks up the A330 (I’m not sure if I got the model number right but it was the one with the faux carbon fiber looking grip) and says, “Oh yeah – that’s awful. There’s nothing to hold on to!” So the first guy says, ‘Maybe this would be nice for my kid!” and they both burst out in laughter. So the guy puts down the Alpha and goes back to the D90 and picks it up and says, “Oh yeah – I can see myself getting real comfortable with this grip”. Then the salesman walks over and asks him, “So what are you leaning on?” and the guy says, “I’m gonna take the D90 – it feels great”.

Nikon D90 vs Panasonic GH1 – Steve Morgenstern:

The first SLR to offer video recording capability, the Nikon D90 version of this feature suffers in comparison to the Panasonic GH1 in many ways, including lower resolution, a maximum clip size of 5 minutes, a distinct wobble effect when the camera is moved quickly, limited recording controls and the lack of autofocus while shooting..On the still photo front, though, the D90 is a superior choice, with better results in nearly every image quality lab test a more sophisticated system for manual control and a body built to take more punishment in rugged shooting situations.

Nikon D5000 vs Nikon D90: JPEG Image Quality – Reading through Thom Hogan’s article titled “D3000 and D300s Leaked–Predictions Updated”, you’ll find this paragraph:

What looks a bit weak in the expected lineup is the D90. The D5000 is so close to the D90 that the D90 looks a bit strange in this lineup, especially when you consider that the D5000 seems to produce better JPEG image quality than the D90 out of the same sensor.

Canon 50D vs Nikon D90: In-camera CA Reduction – Andy Westlake, in response to a question on the excessive CA in this Canon 50D photo, and about the comparisons between the sample photos posted from both cameras:

Canons don’t have in-camera CA correction, this is only available when shooting RAW and processing in DPP (and then only for profiled Canon lenses). The 50D does however have vignetting correction built in.

This in fact is one area where Nikon are well ahead; the D90 has auto CA correction on all lenses, vignetting correction, and even adds distortion correction (profiled for known Nikon lenses) in the retouch menu.

Auto CA correction has a significant impact, as it also improves overall IQ towards the corners substantially, and is probably one of the main reasons the D90’s JPEGs look so good.

  • Nikon D80 vs D90? Thom prefers the D90

Thom Hogan mentioned, in no uncertain terms, why he prefers the Nikon D90:

If you’re looking for the best tool for producing the best possible photograph, there’s little question in my mind that the winner there is the D90. Indeed, I’m not sure how you can say otherwise. The D80 is actually my LEAST favorite of any camera Nikon has produced since the D70. It hot pixels worse than any other Nikon, Nikon never fully fixed the amp noise issue, it has the least capable high ISO JPEG from the same sensor as other Nikons (the D60, for example), and the matrix metering is horribly off-kilter. THAT’S a “pure photographic tool”? Sorry, but it looks as if the D90 fixes all of those things, so it wins on that alone in my book.

In summary, the D90 fixes many of the shortcomings on the Nikon D80.
